In her book Strong, Calm and Free, Nicola Jane Hobbs describes the five branches of wellbeing that can lead us to a balanced and fulfilling life. One of these branches is the mind, which plays a central role in our overall wellbeing.
The Power of the Mind: Mindfulness for Mental Health
Mental health is deeply connected to our physical wellbeing – a principle firmly rooted in psychophysiology. Our mind influences our body and vice versa. However, true mental health goes far beyond the mere absence of stress or worry. It requires wholeness – the ability to perceive, accept, and allow the full spectrum of human emotions without suppressing or rejecting them.
Using the Mind Consciously Instead of Being Driven by Automatism
Our thinking often follows automated patterns deeply rooted in our subconscious. Some of these patterns may be helpful, while others prevent us from being truly present in the moment. Mindfulness helps us recognize these inner processes and use our mind consciously – instead of simply following its impulses. It creates space for clarity, allowing us to make conscious decisions rather than reacting impulsively to external stimuli.
Learning, Memory, Attention and Motivation: Keys to Mental Wellbeing
Mental health involves more than emotional stability. It also includes the ability to learn, to remember, to stay attentive, and to act from inner motivation. When we treat our mind mindfully, we can strengthen these abilities in a focused way. Yoga offers a protected space where we can connect with our inner world and train the mind. Through mindful movement and breathing practices, we learn to sharpen our mental focus, observe our thoughts, and be less carried away by external circumstances.
Mindfulness: A Path to Presence, Openness, and Inner Balance
Mindfulness is a conscious way of living – a state of nonjudgmental awareness in the here and now. It invites us to accept our feelings and sensory experiences as they are. With an open heart, and with kindness, curiosity and patience, we meet the world – without constantly judging or trying to control it. This attitude opens a deeper connection to ourselves and to others. It helps calm the mental noise, find inner peace, and live an authentic, healthy life.
Mental wellbeing begins where we learn to think, feel, and act mindfully. By using our mind consciously instead of being driven by it, we tap into a valuable resource: the ability to live with awareness, presence, and inner freedom – in harmony with body, mind, and heart.
