The Body’s Internal Waste Management: What We Can Learn from Nobel Laureate Yoshinori Ohsumi

Do you know that feeling when notes, old receipts, and coffee cups pile up on your desk over weeks? Eventually, the workflow stalls, and nothing runs smoothly anymore. Exactly the same thing happens every single day inside our own cells. For a long time, I wondered how our body actually manages not to drown in its own "cellular waste" under constant stress – and how we can actively support this process.
The Science Behind Cellular Self-Cleaning
The scientific answer to this is called autophagy (from the Greek for "self-eating"). In 2016, Japanese cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for decoding precisely how this fascinating mechanism works.
Ohsumi demonstrated how cells package damaged proteins and faulty cellular components into small transport vesicles, break them down, and recycle the individual building blocks. Autophaghy is essentially our body's highly efficient recycling system. When it functions well, it protects us against premature aging, inflammation, and cellular dysfunction.
Bringing Body and Mind into Balance
The amazing thing about it: We are not passively subject to this process. Autophaghy is ramped up especially when the cell experiences a mild shortage – for example, through intermittent fasting, targeted movement, or conscious recovery phases. When we grant the body breaks from constant food intake, it switches from processing mode to cleanup mode. We use this exact same principle in mindfulness and yoga: By letting go of external distractions and reducing stimuli, we not only create space for new things in our mind, but also give the body the energy it needs for internal regeneration.
Your Impulse for the Week
You don't have to turn your life upside down overnight. Start small:
Experiment with a fasting window of 14 to 16 hours overnight.
Integrate intentional movement into your daily routine.
Give your mind regular breaks from digital screens.
Your body already possesses the perfect tools for renewal – you just need to give it the space to use them!
